Agriculture and Livestock Development Cabinet Secretary, Hon. Mutahi Kagwe, EGH, today hosted a farmer’s field day at Kabuline Primary School in Tigania East Constituency, Meru County.
The event, themed “Clean Planting Materials for Increased Productivity,” aimed to equip farmers with skills and expertise to enhance their production and productivity.
Hon. Kagwe emphasized the importance of the theme, noting that access to clean planting materials is critical for the growth of the agricultural sector. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring farmers have access to quality planting materials through the development and implementation of regulations on production and support for accessibility.
AFA will continue to collaborate with nurseries to ensure farmers receive high-quality planting materials through regular inspections for compliance. The Authority is also working with stakeholders to address challenges, create a conducive regulatory environment, and improve market access to help farmers earn better incomes from their produce.
During the event, the Cabinet Secretary commissioned the distribution of 5,000 macadamia seedlings to farmers to promote macadamia production in the region. He also handed over two de-huskers to support post-harvest handling of macadamia nuts, further boosting the sector’s efficiency.
The Authority has ongoing interventions in various sub-sectors, including nuts and oil, potatoes, coffee, miraa, horticulture, and rice, all aimed at increasing production, productivity, and farm incomes.
The event was attended by notable dignitaries, including AFA Director General Dr. Bruno Linyiru, OGW, AFA Board and Management team, Tigania East MP Hon. Mpuru Aburi, and Tigania West MP Hon. Dr. John Mutunga, among others.
