Our Mandate
The mandate of the Directorate is to regulate, develop and promote Miraa, Pyrethrum and Other Industrial crops sub-sectors in Kenya.
The Directorate draws its mandate from the Agriculture and Food Authority Act (Act No. 13 of 2013) and the Crops Act (Act No. 16 of 2013).
The functions of the Directorate are:
- Promote best practices in, and regulate, the production, processing, marketing, grading, storage, collection, transportation and warehousing of Miraa, Pyrethrum and Other Industrial Crops products;
- Collect and collate data, maintain a database on Miraa, Pyrethrum and Other Industrial Crops;
- Formulate general and specific policies and guidelines for the development of Miraa, Pyrethrum and Other Industrial Crops;
- Facilitate marketing and distribution of Miraa, Pyrethrum and Other Industrial Crops products;
- Conduct capacity building programs for County Governments’ agriculture staff and other stakeholders in Miraa, Pyrethrum and Other Industrial Crops;
- Establish and enforce standards in grading, sampling and inspection, tests and analysis, specifications, units of measurement, code of practice and packaging, preservation, conservation and transportation of Miraa, Pyrethrum and Other Industrial;
- Promote and advise on strategies for value addition for Miraa, Pyrethrum and Other Industrial Crops; and
- Recommend and enforce general industry contracts between farmers and processors of Miraa, Pyrethrum and Other Industrial Crops.
