Our Background
Kenya Coconut Development Authority
Kenya Coconut Development Authority (KCDA) was a State Corporation in the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries mandated to develop, promote and regulate the coconut industry in Kenya. KCDA was established under the provisions of the State Corporations Act cap 446 through the Legal Notice No. 165 of 27th August 2007.
The Authority was established to be an agent in the development of a competitive coconut industry and to provide a framework for enhanced services and earnings through the development, promotion and regulation of the coconut industry in Kenya.
The Nuts & Oil Crops Directorate
Most nuts and oil crops had no defined regulator, save for the macadamia and coconut subsectors, which were under the now defunct Horticultural Crops Development Authority (HCDA) and the Kenya Coconut Development Authority (KCDA), respectively. This set up to some extent exploited the potential in the nuts and oil crops subsector, the desired results were however, not adequately achieved.
The enactment of the Agriculture and Food Authority Act 2013 and the Crops Act 2013 established the Nuts and Oil Crops Directorate as one of the Directorates under the Agriculture and Food Authority (AFA). The NOCD is mandated to develop, promote, and regulate the nuts and oil crops in Kenya. In addition to Coconuts, the Directorate’s mandate was expanded to include additional nuts and oil crops such as Macadamia, Cashew nuts, Peanuts, Sunflower, Sesame (Simsim), Rape seed (Canola), Safflower, Sunflower, Jojoba, Castor bean, Bambara Nuts, Oil Palm and Linseed (Flax).
