Agriculture and Food Authority through the Horticultural Crops Directorate regulates the Horticulture industry through licensing and enforcement of Horticulture Standards and Regulations.
Kenya Exports Beans, Peas in Pods and other horticultural produce, to various international market destinations. In order to safeguard our export market for Beans and Peas in Pods, the Directorate has instituted measures to minimize interceptions due to exceedance of pesticide residue limits, by enforcing compliance with the National Horticulture Standard, Global GAP Food Safety Standard and Horticulture Regulations.
All exporters of beans and peas in pod are therefore notified (pursuant to the provisions of section 16(1) and section 19(1) of the Horticulture Regulations 2020), that they are required to:
1. Ensure that their farms (including out-growers) are certified to the National Horticulture Standard (KS 1758:2016: part 2) or Global GAP food safety standard.
2. Submit valid food safety certificates stipulated above (1) during export license application or renewal.
Subsequently, exporters of beans and peas in pod are required to demonstrate compliance, failure to which their dealership for beans and peas in pods will be revoked.
